Valley Spinners Guild hosts its first Sheep to Shawl demonstration at the Evergreen State Fair, Sept.1 in the Wool Dept.Come help or watch as we shear the sheep, card, spin and weave the wool it into a garment in a few hours.A little miracle.
On the farm, breeding replacement lambs are all in their new homes; and the meat lambs are out to pasture. 21 Broilers went to the freezer recently. Cowboy the horse has given me some lovely rides. Our summer came suddenly and is unprecedented in its lack of rain. Just beautiful blue skies and moderate temperatures. The milk ewes have been reduced to once a day milking since my milk freezer is full. I make cheese weekly-pecorino, mozzarella and fromage blanc. It is an exhausting season of chores from sunup to sundown+, but the fringe benefits in great food, quiet times and fresh air make up for the work.We now prepare for August, our busy fair month, where we work at 4 fairs in as many weeks.
In the mill, after early spring lows, this year's clip arrived enmasse! The fleece shelves are full to overflowing with wonderful carding projects; blends of silk/alpaca, comforter batts and more.Exciting news is a 3-way deal between our mill, Greener Lifestyles ( www.greenerlifestyles.com ) decorating firm in Ballard, and Janicki Family Farms of Mt Vernon. Greener Lifestyles shares my passion for utilizing local, sustainably raised products in their furniture business. They have bought the Janicki farm clip of heritage breed, Horned Dorset wool;and I will card it. This wool has fabulous memory and loft to create springy batting in their lovely couches and chairs.
Check out the new "photo gallery" link from the "About Us Page" on our website for seasonal pictures from the farm.
